The Color of Fear: the Paradox of Race and Oppression in the new Millennium

How does one confront racism in todays world? What factors contribute to the racism and oppression people face?


In an effort to stimulate critical thinking about these issues, Simmons College, Associate Professor Gary Bailey will address these questions and others regarding racism and oppression in relation to sociopolitical issues, economic factors, and historical themes. Bailey also will provide a framework for confronting racism and oppression.


Bailey is a highly sought-after consultant on topics that include international social work practice; elder and family housing program development; diversity, social justice, and human rights; working with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities; and board development. He is chair of The Council of Black Administrators, Faculty, and Staff, and the School of Social Work Awards Committee.

George Carlin: Archive Interview

George Dennis Carlin, né le 12 mai 1937 à New York et mort le 22 juin 2008 à Santa Monica à l'âge de 71 ans12, était un humoriste, acteur et scénariste américain.


George Carlin est célèbre pour son attitude irrévérencieuse et ses observations sur le langage, la psychologie et la religion, ainsi que de nombreux sujets tabous aux États-Unis. Son sketch Seven dirty words des années 70 fut l'objet d'un jugement de la Cour suprême des Etats-Unis, à l'issue duquel le gouvernement fut autorisé à réguler le contenu des diffusions publiques pour éviter l'usage de langage trop vulgaire sur les ondes. Il existe sept mots qui ne peuvent pas être prononcés à l'antenne, sous peine d'amende assez lourde. Ces mots sont : shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, et tits 3.


Il s'inscrit dans la lignée d'humoristes comme Lenny Bruce. En 2004 la chaîne Comedy Central le classa deuxième meilleur humoriste américain de tous les temps derrière Richard Pryor.

David Feldman, MD, professor of medicine at Stanford, explores the biological action of Vitamin D beyond its widely understood role in the information and maintenance of bone.


Emerging therapeutic uses of the vitamin include the prevention and treatment of breast, prostate and colon cancer, chronic kidney disease and arthritis, among other conditions.

Mapping Memory in the Brain

Eric R. Kandel, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, probes into the mind to demonstrate how it is much more complex than just a series of processes carried out by the brain.


The brain produces our every emotional, intellectual and athletic act. It allows us to acquire new facts and skills, and to remember them for as long as a lifetime. Memory exists in two major forms, each located in different brain regions. Explicit memory is for people, places, and objects.


In contrast, implicit memory serves perceptual and motor skills. In concert, these two memory systems help make us who we are.
