It happened at Waimea Bay on December 7, the day before the Eddie contest.

Thierry Henry handball controversy

There was plenty of sympathy for the Republic of Ireland in the French media after the controversial extra-time goal that denied them a place in next summer's World Cup finals.


According to the Telegraph website, French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes admitted he understood the Irish frustrations.


"We were stunned and were not able to develop our game - I understand that the Irish are frustrated," he told L'Equipe.


"They must forget this evening and use it for the future.


"You have to take a philosophical approach to this match. Football is played on small details, however, qualification is still beautiful."

US Open 2009: Serena Willimas' Tantrum

Serena Williams gave an first class example of how to throw away a place in a Grand Slam final in her match against Kim Clijsters.


Not happy with smashing her racket in the first set in a fit of rage the World No 2 went on to gift her Belgian opponent with the match after reacting to a foot-fault penalty. Her challenge to the line judge was met with a further point penalty which, with the match at 6-4, 6-7 and 15-40, meant Williams was out of the competition.

When challenging the line call, the 27-year-old was heard saying: "I never said I would kill you, are you serious?" She later denied there was any need to apologise for her actions.

* 1 - John McEnroe (1981):

In 1981 John McEnroe caused a storm in his first round match on Wimbledon's No 1 Court against Tom Gullikson. Having already broken a racket, he threw another to the ground over a line call and screamed: "Man, you cannot be serious!" Minutes later, after another contentious call, McEnroe exploded. "You guys are the pits of the world!"

* 2 - Goran Ivanisevic:

Goran Ivanisevic conceded his second round match in Brighton's Samsung Open in November 2000 after smashing all three of his rackets. "I have nothing left to play with," he said, before storming off the court.

Jimmy Connors could go down as the most foul-mouthed player to have ever featured on the Open scene. When a let-call went against the American he challenged the umpires judgment. Refusing to move on his views he said: "I'm not gonna f..king run away from you like that f..kface McEnroe."

That is according to the Telegraph, but most think that Jimmy connors most outrageous tantrum was against McEnroe: It's January 1982 and a tennis war is being staged in Chicago in the Michelob light exhibition match between Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe. This match had everything including a red -hot Jimmy walking over the net to confront John (Watch 1st Video).

* 4 - Ilie Nastase:

Ilie Nastase was responsible for 18 minutes of chaos at the 1979 US Open in his match against John McEnroe. A controversial call from the umpire went against the Romanian who refused to accept the decision and, despite having the backing of the crowd, was disqualified from the match.

Calling for referee Mike Blanchard's opinion Nastase was reinstated and the umpire removed.

* 5 - Tim Henman:

Tim Henman earned himself a nasty boy label at the 1995 Wimbledon Championships when he and doubles partner Jeremy Bates became the first players to be disqualified from the SW19 competition in the Open era after Henman smashed a ball in to the head of a ballgirl in a fit of rage.

* 6 - Greg Rusedski:

Greg Rusedski made his feelings known to the umpire at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships when he lost a point to American Andy Roddick after someone in the crowd shouted "out" midway through a rally. Rusedski reacted after the official refused to replay the point saying: "I can't do anything if the f****** crowd calls it. It's absolutely f****** ridiculous. It's fr***ing ridiculous. Some w***** in the crowd changed the whole match and you allowed it to happen. Well done. Absolute s***."

* 7 - Martina Hingis:

Martina Hingis, in a stormy French Open Final in 1999 against Steffi Graf, became so frustrated with the umpiring that she crossed to the German's side of the court to carry out her own investigation. With the crowd turning on her Hingis served underarm while facing two match points.

* 8 - Jeff Tarango:

Jeff Tarango gave an entertaining performance at the 1995 Wimbledon Championships. The American stormed off court following a string of arguments with umpire Bruno Rebeuh who he branded “one of the most corrupt officials in the game”. Not wanting to miss out on the action, Tarango's wife slapped the official round the face.

* 9 - Mikhail Youzhny:

Mikhail Youzhny is the biggest victim of his own temper it seems. When the Russian mishit a backhand against Nicolas Almagro at last year's Sony Ericsson Open he angrily beat himself in the head three times with his racket strings. The force of his swipes was such that his head went through the racket sending a thick stream of blood down his face.
